One mistake a lot of people make when they visit Hawaii is to assume there is a wet and/or dry season, but it's not quite that simple. At times, these winds can die down and practically reverse so that a south wind blows over the islands, resulting in very hot and muggy conditions. These trade winds bring cool air to the islands from the north, often resulting in precipitation along inland/mountain and windward areas. These winds blow NE to ENE and are typically more prevalent in the winter months. The islands of Hawaii are affected by the trade winds. It can get very cold at the summit of the larger volcanoes - trust us on that! If you're planning to go up to higher elevations on either Maui or the Big Island, bring a small coat and long convertible pants. Volcano, on the Big Island, or Kokee on Kauai, can get quite chilly at night for example. Temperatures at night are typically 12-18☏ (7-8☌) cooler, but this can change dramatically depending on your altitude. At sea level, it's usually about 76-85☏ (24-29☌) all year-round. As far as temperature goes, plan accordingly for the island you're visiting.The only time it's really wet in Hawaii for a prolonged time is during the winter months, usually from November until March.
